Glow plugs are used in diesel vehicles as an ignition component to aid the starting of the engine. Unlike petrol engines, diesel engines do not use spark plugs for combustion instead they rely on heat from highly compressed air to initiate combustion.
Glow plugs help heat up the engine cylinders, warming the engine block and aiding the spontaneous combustion of the diesel. Whereas older glow plugs required a long pre-heating “wait to start” period, more modern diesel cars start much quicker.
