Brake drums are used mainly for handbrake systems; they work by forcing the brake shoes in contact with the brake drum. There are two brake shoes in the brake drum that provide the resistance to stop and hold the vehicle while parking.
Drum brakes were common as the main braking system but have now been replaced in many situations by disc braking; the exception is the hand brake (parking brake), working together with shoes and the handbrake cable.
Over time brake drums can wear and corrode and will need checking and replacing. Autosessive offers replacement brake drums and brake shoes, online and available for next day delivery.
